Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison today (Monday) for tax evasion, according to ABC. The former Fugees star and “Sister Act 2” actress failed to pay federal taxes on $1.8 million income earned between 2005 and 2007. It was reported that Ms. Hill made a last minute payment of over $900,000 yesterday, but it wasn’t enough to avoid jail time. Still, her sentence is peanuts in comparison to other celebrities’ tax evasion charges (like Wesley Snipes, who was sentenced to three years back in 2010). Plus, that new deal with Sony should be a nice welcome home present.
Says Ms. Hill:
I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that.

After the untimely death of Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly on Wednesday afternoon, Atlanta police investigated to see if the rapper’s passing was due to a possible drug overdose. Once the autopsy was completed yesterday, no evidence of trauma or foul play was the cause of his death but according to a report obtained by MTV News, “Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, told officers that the rapper had taken a mixture of cocaine and heroin the night before, a concoction commonly known as speedballs.”
Kelly’s official cause of death will not be determined until at least three weeks after the toxicology report is complete, a county rep tells MTV News.
Pratte added that she had brought Kelly home to recover from his drug use and that he “had done this several times in the past.”
The morning of his death, Kelly was on a phone call with Atlanta radio station producer, Akini of Streetz 94.5. Akini wrote on the station’s website that, “When you listen to the phone conversation, you can tell there is a lot going on in the background” during the minute-long conversation.
With a report of a death called in, the police arrived at Kelly’s house where they found him unresponsive on the couch with no signs of life. He was transferred to Atlanta Medical Center South where he was pronounced dead. Kelly was 34.
Fans and celebrities took their reactions to Twitter to express their sympathies and honor to him once the news broke. Diddy, Nicki Minaj and Tia Mowry tweeted, “RIP Chris Kelly,” “Rip #chriskelly” and Ludacris tweeted his honor to Kelly as a inspiration to get into the rap game, “One of my motivations as a kid to even get into the rap game. You will be missed R.I.P Chris Kelly.”
Pratte issued a statement on her son’s death, writing, “It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1.
Kelly also known as “Mac Daddy” and partner Chris Smith (“Daddy Mac”) rose to fame when they were young teens in 1990’s. The duo’s was best known for their hit 1992 single, “Jump” which was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and was certified double platinum as a single. Along with other accolades, the group was also noted for their fashion style of wearing clothing backwards.
